by the way my friends brand new Passat CC had delamination issues on the front bumper, it has 10k miles...
Class action suit would be nice. VWOA has really avoided dealing with this and it is clearly a defect on their end. Other companies have dealt with similar issues like this in the past with great success. I recall Ford trucks in the 1980's had an issue with the clear coat or paint peeling and they re-painted customer's vehicles. I love my car but don't feel like spending $2K on a full re-spray to fix negligence on the manufacturers behalf.
I have peeling on my '04 TR R32 on the hood, roof, and now tiny little pinpoints are starting on the deck lid. If you look at the roof and hood at an angle, it looks like there are little iredescent (sp?) spots which scare the crap out of me because I can't get them out and I fear they are the start of the peeling process.
I called VWOA a few weeks ago and was told to take it to the local dealer and have the manager look at it to determine if they will do anything. Unfortunately, I had already done that and the dealer told me it was caused by tree sap and that they couldn't do anything for me. Now, since I'm a girl, I assumed that he was just saying that b.s. to get me to go away but after reading what some of you have been told, I see that it's a bigger issue.
My mom's the original owner and I bought it from her in October 2007. It only started to peel in December of 2009. My mom got the '08 DBP R32 and has no issues.....yet.
It's heartbreaking to see such a beautiful machine have this issue and have no support from VW.
VWOA has denied all cases but one (powerdubs)
The regional reps will not take responsibility and just deny the claim once it reaches them. I have even had a hard time getting dealers to pass the info along to the regional reps!!!
Basically we need to surpass the dealers, and regional reps to get to someone who CAN actually do something. Or hire lawyers (which vw will hire 10x more expensive ones), or all meet up and get a group rate on a full respray
Thanks again VWOA
this thread made my heart drop!! im in the market for an R32! How can a car with only 50K miles have such a paint job problem? Is this some flaw from the factory? I have an 02 GTI 337 with 90K miles and i have only 1 spot of clearcoat peal on the front bumper, its not even noticable!
I don't know what's involved (time, money, etc.) but I'm very seriously interested in starting a class action lawsuit. Does anyone know how to go about doing it? What's involved?
I'm very close to VWoA headquarters and can always drop in on them!
I think someone just needs to contact a good class action attorney, present them with the facts and see if they feel we have a chance, if they will represent us, and of course, how much they will take from the settlement. Finding an attorney near VWoA headquarters would be ideal to keep down travel expenses that attorney's may charge (hint hint!) I would be happy to draft a letter stating our case.
Projekt R32 - who do you suggest I ask to see if I decide to drop in? I don't have any contacts or names to ask for. We really should try to do a conference call of something so we can really get this off of the ground.
My car looks like poop because I've dabbed paint over the clearcoat to stop the spreading and I'm tired of being upset about it. Let's do this!!
Follow this link...think it might be worth a shot contacting any of these people? just a thought.
Yea i was thinking that maybe contacting some of these PR people might spark some interest. Problems like this is bad PR in my eyes, especially if they see threats of class action lawsuits. Contacting some PR people might be worth a shot seeing how everything else has gotten shot down so far.
Even contacting the VW Motorsport guy might help, part of his job is to promote the performance aspects of vw, I think R32 owners are a significant portion of his demographic.

Just bought my TR R last week (it was fairly dark couldn't see much), and I noticed this issue the day after I took delivery. I had assumed it was the PO's negligence, the paint looked like no one really took care of it. It made me wonder, however, because my clear coat has come off in the section about the size of a quarter on my roof. and on my hatch the clear is hazing pretty heavily.
I figure if I am going to have to shell out cash to repair this, I may as well get a full on color change.
Hope VW does something about this, now I know that this is a common issue
