I've been thinking about one of these, but I worry about the brakes. The Focus ST has awful brakes and I need something that can take a beating.

Has anyone compared the Focus and Fiesta ST's back to back? I really like the Fiesta, but the power and size of the Focus makes it more appealing. The Focus optioned how I want is too pricey for me new, but the Fiesta is perfect. There's only 1 Fiesta ST local to me and that dealer doesn't have a Focus to compare it too.

I drove both at the Ford Driving Event about a month ago. The Focus was fun and had a bit more oomph than the Fiesta, but I preferred the Fiesta's handling and lighter weight on the little autocross course they had set up.

I would want to try both cars on real roads before I made a decision -- Fiesta has a twist-beam rear end; I might go for the Focus (IRS) if the roads around you aren't in the best shape.

Check out some current deals (factory and dealer-driven) on the Focus ST - I wouldn't be surprised if some dealers were offering OTD pricing very close to the Fiesta ST...

Discount stickers on the windows near me say that you can definitely get them below sticker, by thousands.

Friend of mine purchased a base Focus ST yesterday for $22.6k after TTL.

I doubt the brakes are as much of a concern as you're making them out to be.

Saw my first one in the wild yesterday. First impression as it passed me: Damn, that's a plump rear end. Do not care for. Would like to see one up close, though. Maybe I could learn to love the curves?

I went and had a look at one the other day, unfortunately they're too small for my needs.

At 6'5", there isnt room for me + a helmet on, unless I take the factory Recaros out and bolt a fixed back to the floor. That isn't going to cut it for me.

I plan on writing something up within a week on the practical and not so practical on them both.

I can't wait for that, especially since you uniquely have both readily available to compare. (Even more so over the long term. )

I'm sort of surprised by this claim as well. I've run a bone-stock 2010 Speed3 through 20-30 minute track sessions with no issues, and I'm 99% certain the brakes are identical, right down to the pad compounds.

Identical to Focus ST or Fiesta ST?

In for more of this... went to try and see if the local dealer had one at the end of August, no dice, but they offered me a pretty good discount on the Focus ST.

...But test driving around the block behind a school bus full of children before taking me back to the dealer isn't going to sell me on a car no matter how much you take off the sticker.

I test drove a 500 Abarth Cabrio two weeks back and the salesman let me hoon the bejesus out of it. If it wasn't $30k I'd probably have bought it on the spot.

If I went down to drive a Fiesta ST and was only treated to a leisurely sunday drive in 25mph suburban areas, for about 10 minutes, I'd go back to the Fiat dealer.

The red calipers are out of place on the car. Maybe if they were black it would be better. And the grey wheels just look unfinished.

The brakes on both cars were fine at the Ford event, despite the 100°F temperatures. There was a verrrry slight odor of hot pads in the air, but the brakes were good -- and people weren't being easy on them.

Yeah. I have a lot of track time in various Focus STs and have yet to experience any issues I'd consider problematic.

Haha, will do In Ford's defense they did put on a really good show with the national EcoBoost Challenge/ST Performance Academy, and I can tell you next year they have some even cooler stuff planned

You couldn't stand the MCS any longer?

My partner has a MCS too, though it's auto. I personally hate the thing. The RFTs have been removed, but the ride is bone jaring. So many interior panels are creaking, and the roads here are much nicer than in North America! We recently went on a quick weekend trip to Gold Coast where we hired an Audi A1 from Europcar. It's a basic 1.4T model with DSG and Xenons, but the ride, handling, NVH is much better than the MCS. I went online to research pricing, and apparently the A1 is actually $6,000 cheaper than the MCS. She has 7 years of warranty + 4 years paid service (came as part of the CPO package), and I'm really pushing her to trade the car in.
