      Check out that prestige gap!

      http://www.autoevolution.com/news/ne...th-99641.html#

The wait is finally over, with our spy photographers having encountered a 2018 Wrangler test mule in the Southwestern desert. Mad Max visual setup aside, the test vehicle reveals an important aspect about the iconic model, namely that it will grow in length.

As you can see in the gallery below, the area between the hood and the cowl has gained about one inch, with the front fenders also being adapted to support the increase. Expect this extra space to be invested into the next Wrangler’s wheelbase.

The Wrangler will keep its short front and rear overhangs in order to maintain its brilliant approach and departure angles. And since the vehicle must also deliver in terms of the break-over angle, the wheelbase increase has to be moderate.

Nevertheless, this will allow the Wrangler to offer superior interior space, mixing a modern cabin with an overall setup that will help the vehicle stay true to its roots, both in terms of styling and rugged terrain capacities.

Except for all the places where it is different.

I find it odd that they are testing a 2 door SUV since none are sold and no one wants to buy them.

I think the 1/3 of the people that buy one of the most-selling vehicles on the market would probably disagree.

No kidding. Two door Wranglers are friggin everywhere.

Also it's obvious this is a test mule, it's a JK with hard rock bumpers

As a two door, probably to draw even less attention. No shortage of 2 or 4 doors here in AZ

I'm just dumping on MCTB because he likes to make blanket statements claiming that no one wants\buys them.

Is he starting a support group for all the poor schlubs that are coerced into buying 2 door SUVs, even though they loathe / don't want them?

Amazing. I was just literally just this morning thinking about when we would start to see spy shots and leaked pictures of the upcoming new Jeeps and Dodges...

In for more without current mule sheet metal.

You're right. There is so much demand that there are what, two on the market? Evoque and Wrangler? So popular all other makes abandoned the style...

I don't know if the Wrangler is exactly in the same class as most other SUV's. A lot of the two doors are actually spending time off road, they're a convertible, etc. If 1/3 of Wrangler sales are two doors that is approaching six digits sold per year.

It's not. It's an exception. Ford, Toyota, Dodge, Chevrolet, Mitsubishi, Nissan, all abandoned the two door here. Jeep does it out of tradition. Even they ditched the two door Cherokee and Grand Cherokee.

The reason they are testing the 2 door is because that is the one getting the wheelbase changing, which 2 door people have been looking for since the launch of the JK. The older LJ was close to being the perfect size and this newer spy shot looks to be an additional 3-4 inches longer. This will allow for more rear leg room and a bit of a smoother/less twitchy ride.

I spy WAY beefier steering components and also aluminum knuckles. It sure does look like the front control arms are way longer than a JK, the wheel isn't even centered in the well. With that and the cowl getting an extension it doesnt look like any of the added length has gone towards cabin room like some people have mentioned. Also I was hoping for a longer Unlimited so we could see what the wheelbase might be on the pickup. Either way its exciting!

Judging by the gap between the front bumper and the grill the entire body still needs to come forward. We are still a long way away from Jeep showing us an actual modified body as that would be a waste of money on an early chassis mule. Look at how far down the extra skid plate and fuel tank currently sit in the mule. Most of the stretch in wheelbase will be in the cabin other then a little room to fit the diesel motor in the future.
