I'd expect 28-30mpg highway out of the diesel.
Vehicles like the Wrangler, 911, Mini Cooper, Beetle, and to a lesser extent, the Golf, are somewhat defined by their familiar shapes and front end graphics. This is an asset, not "polishing a turd for 30 years" as you said in your previous post. Hell, VW is so proud of the deliberate evolution of the Golf, that they frequently publish photos of the generations together.
Regarding the Jeep sounding like a tank, a four door hardtop with factory tires and factory ride height is a pretty quiet ride. Add aftermarket off road tires and the interior decibels will certainly increase, but Wrangler owners who modify their Jeeps expect and even like the added road noise.

my dad installed the Quadratec LED lights on his JK rubicon. They are a MASSIVE improvement over stock, and they dont look weird like the JW speaker ones you are probably talking about. They were cheap too, i think he paid $400 or less and they came with the anti flicker harness included. Install is incredibly easy too. I think it took me a half hour from start to finish
