replacing any of that with "conventional" hardware would be a huge undertaking.
for example, there isnt a brake master cylinder (these early cars had one for "brake feel" but thats about it), or a place to put a booster.

on the other hand, fixing whats already there - and what works well if its maintained! - is a lot easier as you can order up a few boxes of parts from albers or flying spares that youre sure will fit and go wild replacing them.

im not a purist by any means, but its a stretch to think you could have it converted to some "conventional" state for less money/effort than itd take to just make it a working stock example. not to mention it wouldnt be worth much if you hacked it all up to fit a SBC in there.

so, in closing, of course theyre complicated - they cost ~2x the price of an average home when new.
but all of the parts are available and nearly all of the complex systems were designed to be rebuilt and all of those rebuild and service parts are available.

...but i feel like im talking to myself... in before someone else posts "yeah, but itd be perfect with an SBC"

Reality sets in on a Roadkill dream. Something like this would be a lot more fun than another G body (no offense to the G body builders).

Something like this with better cosmetics would be fun.

I've been pestering ValveCoverGasket for info on these, they just seem like the perfect way to distract yourself from being stuck in LA traffic - assuming you've properly refreshed the cooling system, of course..
another thing to note, speaking of traffic. these early RHD cars had the 4spd gearbox as i mentioned earlier, which in antique gm circles is known as the jerkomatic.
its stout, if the fluid is kept up on, but not super smooth in the 2->3 shift as it has to shift the range and the gear at the same time. that synchronization isnt always perfect and you get a bit of a bump depending on how dialed in it is (too soft and youre burning up clutches, so its worth going a bit on the bumpier side).
granted in slow enough traffic youd be in 2nd most of the time anyway, but something to keep in mind... then again T1s dont grow on trees, finding one with a 3spd could be tricky, and i go back to my earlier point about valuation and rarity.
this one could actually have some ROI...

This one is not nearly Vad-worthy... the engine starts for one. It also doesn't have that much rust. And it doesn't have salvage title.

Yeah, that's why I posted the other one earlier but the one he found has potential without being perfect... so it's in the range of your normal VadApproved project, plus it's endorsed* by those who know a bit about them, so I hope he does it.

*= endorsed along with all informed cautions.

To add to that, unless you feel like driving to Rancho Cordova . Of note, I am already sending Nick to look at an M Roadster in Rancho Cordova this weekend.

The M Roadster is nearly the same price as the Bentley.

      Hmmm.

How is it that we are now on page 3 of a Vad car shopping thread and we haven't digressed into a discussion about pastrami sandwich?

I am not getting involved in this. I am not getting involved in this. I AM NOT GETTING INVOLVED IT THIS.

Ok fine, I am off till the 28th so I can donate some of my time. But my driveway is off limits or Titleist will laugh in my face when my wife files for divorce.

We are looking at a car for Vad. We should just roll up in Bent M, kick the tires and pay in rubles.
I'll also bring my Russian babysitter. She knows everything, looks like Andre the Giant and is really good at negotiating the financial terms.

Funny you mention pastrami. Law Bear and I were going to grab lunch at my favorite pastrami place a few months back. Guess where I happened to go for dinner tonight with a friend? Same pastrami place.

You know what sucks? I'm on a diet. I had a salad and didn't have sweet pastrami meat.

You know what else sucks? Vad hasn't purchased this yet.

      - 10 hours buffing the paint
      - 5 hours buffing the glass
      - 5 hours reconditioning and redying the seals
      - 2 weeks pulling apart (semi apart) the interior and shampooing and redying the carpet, treatment of all the leather, treatment of the wood, and just bringing her back to life on the inside where needed.

Then, the controversy: ~Modern 4 disk swap with modern brakes, drivetrain and modern motor swap. 1.5-2" drop on coils and something that complements the car considering the wheels. I'd document the original pieces and sell to others for their restoration purposes.

Mint mint inside, mint mint outside, however solid with an EFI V8 ~modern system.

Let's face it, the #1 reason people avoid cars of this nature is the nightmare which lies beneath it's sheet metal. No one's scared of the body, the interior, the radio, the chrome, the paint.....it's the components under neath which make people cringe, so do away with them.

Do it proper, no bright colors under the hood, no red or blue AN fittings, no stainless steal braided lines. Take the ~modern V8 valve covers and powdercoat them that old red plum matt champagne color, and components that old tan color, using brushed nickle hardware. Nothing glossy, nothing bling.

Best of both words, like a house built in the 1900's with modern wiring, plumbing and roof.
      Yes please. LS Swap it.
