Baffled it took them this long to add LED tails to the Golf models. The Beetle and GLI have had them for quite awhile.

They did - partly; the non PP cars got a nominal 10hp bump from 210 to 220. That happened in RoW too, just from 220 to 230hp. What's odd is that the Performance GTI model got a 15 hp bump to 245 for the RoW, whereas the GTIs with the "PP" equipment in the US, are unchanged, still at 220. I'm glad the SE is now what the Sport was, with some additional niceties. Not a fan of the pano roof, so this is the one for me. Finally LED tails, and LED headlights to boot.

And it won a big award from a top nyc newspaper NY Post.

I really don't get the obsession with amber vs. red blinkers
      Eh? From the press release
The 2018 Golf GTI S has been updated with LED taillights,
It's not so much amber v red, its that I hate the shared blinker/brake light. If you give me a red blinker separate from my brake lamp...okay...

      Totally fair response.

My comment, though clearly lacking in clarity, was directed at the Golf R. ROW got a boost to 303 or 306 HP

Officially yes, although a no-option SE sounds like it's basically the same thing.

Great news if you like the cloth seats (I certainly do) but I like my roof and tunes.
Sunroof is optional, so it's not totally gone.

I'm mostly pleased with these changes. The only 2017 Golf-based model that spoke to me was the Wolfsburg Edition Golf for its driver assistance features and available manual transmission and its other features (auto lights, rain-sensing wipers, etc.) made it a screaming deal even at MSRP. S models were too stripped, SEs and SELs were automatic only. As for GTIs, the S could not be had with the LP anymore nor DAP, the Sport had what was the LP as standard but could not be had with DAP at all, and the SE forced me into leather rather than the iconic plaid. Now, Golf SE models have the MT available and they sound mostly like a continuation of the 2017 Golf Wolfsburg and the GTI-SE models have plaid as standard and the basic DAP, so a GTI could possibly land back on my short list now.

Doubtful. The story is US-spec oriented but the eGolf and R appear to be Euro-spec, judging by the plate holders on the front and the lack of any US/Canadian spec reflector. Given that they have come from Wolfsburg in the past and the rest from Puebla, I'm guessing Puebla is readying with US-spec refresh parts faster than Wolfsburg.

Ya but aren't they just LED bulbs, not full LED tails like the Audi models or eurospec VWs?

Gotcha; I completely ignored the quote in your message. Yeah, that is a bit of a letdown, too. Wonder what's behind that.

So the Sportwagen gets the DSG 6 Speed on all models, but the hatch keeps the torque converter unit? Why?

Audi S3. My guess is they wanted power to be another differentiation.

Good to see they differentiated the R from the GTI a little more. It is a hard sell considering the discounted GTI prices. Now at least it is a little bit easier to justify.

Maybe it's just me, but the Golf looks really generic and feminine now, especially in white.

I like the GTI and R though.

Yeah, mean I'm bummed it's only in the r and e-golf. ROW get it all golf models I believe.

Yes, it is slowly morphing into a feminine suppository on wheels.

I'm wondering if the 4B in fines related to Dieselgate has driven any apparent cost cutting measures in the 2018 models yet...I'm thinking of moving back to an R within the next year and don't want to worry about that. Hopefully any bean counting to make up for the fines will only come into effect with the next redesign.

The Alltrack should have the 2.0T in there. It feels pretty under powered with the 1.8T. Although it's nice that they finally added the DSG in the standard Sportwagen.

The lower bumper vents and grilles bear a much stronger resemblence to a NA-Passat, which is more often than not described as a rather ho-hum and boringly-styled vehicle, so that may be why.

      2017 Golf for comparison:

However, the halogen lights on the lower models IMHO look far better than the outgoing ones and perhaps more importantly the grille on the 2018 base-halogen models seems to have the accent stripe that resides a little higher up and probably is more likely to line up with LP models' lights' styling and a grille swap may no longer be necessary for aesthetic purposes. (Actually looks like VW is managing to use only one grille across both kinds of lights now.)

I'm THIS close to buying an Alltrack. The new infotainment in this one looks pretty damned great... wonder what the non-loaded (SEL level w/ NAV) system will turn out. This will either be enough to rationalize grabbing a 2018 or hopefully lead to some heavy discounts on the 17s. Either way, looks like an AllTrack will be in my future...

That could be just like it was with the Mk6 (i.e. they said 256 for the North American R, yet its actual output was the 270 listed for ROW)
As to why that was done with the Mk6 is anyone's guess, although it was suggested that it had something to do with U.S. govt regs.

Maybe the same thing will go on with the 2018 Mk7 R. Time will tell, I'm sure ROW vs. NA will be dynoed side-by-side at some point, just as they were with the Mk6.

In other news, no manuel for the 1.8T cars? Eeek.
      Let them eat cake...

The R and E-Golf are Euro spec. Notice, no orange reflectors, EU spec higher trim LED tail lights, and that screen is actually the 9.2'' one inside (notice how it has no buttons/knobs)

Golf R has fully sequential LEDs, whereas the GTI has plain jane LEDs.
