      From VWoA press release:

      2018 Golf R

The Golf R—the most powerful Golf model ever to be sold in the North American market—is equipped with an EA888 four-cylinder turbocharged and direct-injection TSI 2.0-liter engine that produces 292 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque (achieved using premium fuel). The Golf R is available with either a six-speed manual transmission or—new for 2018 and exclusive to Golf R—a seven-speed DSG dual clutch automatic.

New features for the 2018 model year include standard LED headlights with the Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS) and LED Daytime Running Lights (DRLs); LED taillights; an 8-inch display for the Composition Media system; Start-Stop for DSG-equipped models; and the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit.

Standard features retained from the 2017 Golf R model include the 4Motion all-wheel drive system; 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels; Performance Monitor (Sport HMI); Electronic Parking Brake; Drive Mode Select with Race Mode; KESSY keyless access with push-button start; 12-way power driver’s seat; ambient lighting; automatic headlights with rain sensor; heated sport seats with leather seating surfaces; Car-Net App-Connect; Car-Net Security & Service with a six-month trial; SiriusXM Satellite Radio with a three-month trial; Voice Control; auto-dimming rearview mirror; and Climatronic.

New equipment in the 2018 Golf R with DCC and Navigation model includes an 8-inch touchscreen for the Discover Media navigation system and Front Assist with Pedestrian Monitoring. Existing equipment includes 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with an all-new design for the 2018 model year; ACC; Blind Spot Monitoring; Lane Assist; Light Assist; Park Distance Control; DCC suspension control; Car-Net Guide & Inform with a three-month trial and the Fender Premium Audio System.

Hmm, implies that there will again be a base model, then a DCC/nav model, as per late 2016. No HP increase that the euro cars got. Rumor has it the LED tails are the down-spec ones that the base Golfs get in Europe, but I haven't seen confirmation of that at this point. Wait for Pizza Boy to weigh in, whatever he says will be the opposite of reality, based on his track record.

*not discover Pro that Europe gets. Only 8 inch discover media* just fixing your typo in the title. And awh man said at least a year after they get released. Looks like im off by 2 months. Fall 2018... But hey maybe by 2019 we will get all the actual updated stuff. Wishful thinking

Looks like NA gets the Euro R tail lights, but man I hate those digital gauges. I need the real thing. The only thing I want from this car are the tail lights and maybe the 7 speed DSG. Real gauges and real needles for a real car IMO. Leave the digital virtual gauges for a Playstation game.

Look closely - the R in the promo pics is clearly a eurospec model - too many euro-only items shown, including rear fog on light switch, folding mirrors, no side markers in lights, 9.2" infotainment, and seat upholstery we don't get. Therefore the LED tails shown are euro too and we won't necessarily get them. It's quite possible that only the down-spec euro tails that the Golf & GTI are getting are the only ones that will be DOT-compliant.

Overall, pretty nice and what I would have expected based on what we knew about the facelift. 8" infotainment is the way to go since it retains the knobs that were dropped on the 9.2" model. Digital dash is tits - I know some don't care for it, but I'd bet most of you who don't think you like it would be won over with one demo. LED headlights are a big deal, if they're anything like the LED lights on my girl's new Mazda3 - they thoroughly outperform the xenons on my R.

Huge apparent omission - Canada gets to order custom colors, but not USA? That's gonna cause a stink. Hell, at the very least, offer some new colors this year, even if in the usual limited range of choices. There were zero changes between '16 & '17, which was unusual and stupid IMHO.

I wouldn't count on the custom colours here in Canada either... since apparently they've been listed for the R previously and then were removed at the time of order.

LED headlights vs xenon... meh. Not a huge improvement in terms of light output but definitely more reliable which is nice. Should be easy enough to swap the headlights and tails hopefully.
Digital dash is "neat" but also troublesome when it drops down to -30C or colder (had one in previous vehicle).

      And those wheels are FUGLY...

I suspect you're right about it being a Euro model. The Euro front plate holder is also odd, given that none of the others have a plate mount. Oh well.

I'd like the digital dash and the 7 speed DSG (and the 9" infotainment). But not nearly enough to change.

Is it just me or do the new tails look more bland than the previous ones?

Get out of here with that start-stop crap! LoL.

      Better be defeatable!

Anyways, I don't see any reason to upgrade until MK8 from MK7.

I am a manual guy myself but yeah I think I'd rather have a 6-speed DSG with no stop/start over the 7-speed with the stop/start function.

I sold my s2000 and my APR s3+ MKIV to buy the Golf in the 6 m/t.

I have had the car for almost two years and I think I want another S2000 and a DSG Golf R. The factory shifter and m/t just don't feel nearly as good as the s2000 and I've got almost 30K on my R.

The question is.... is the new DSG worth waiting for. I'm not sold on the stlying upgrades. I would like the better infotainment but I don't know about the digital cockpit as I haven't seen it in person.

What other models are getting this new 7spd dsg?

As per the release it says that the golf R is the sole model to get the 7speed DSG. Could it change ? Maybe ? But at least based on the release it seems the golf R gets the exclusive. Happen to try any after market parts on your R to get the shifting as you pleasure ?

The front bumper/grille changes are not doing it any favors, it's hideous.

I know everyone excited about 7spd dsg but the front end looks awful for sure. I went through many iG pictures and even new headlights are a bit off IMO.

It is. On euro models the button to deactivate it is the middle button on the left side of the gear shift. The empty one on US spec cars up until now.

I have a US 2017 R with the 6.5" MIB2 HMI. Do you think the 8" HMI in the 2018 is the same as the current ROW 8" HMI that is currently being imported for $900 with the trim piece? I want to swap the 6.5" out for an 8" with knobs. Wondering if the price will be significantly lower if North American dealers sell 2018 parts.

Anyone find out what they changed for the 2018 manual transmission?

It's not the current 8" Discover Pro, it's the all-new 8" Discover Media setup.

No idea what's different about the manual transmission. Hopefully a clutch upgrade!

Sounds like the old unit with a larger screen.

Likes; 7 Speed DSG and larger infotainment
Meh; Digital cockpit and LED headlights
      Dislikes; Body changes, wheels, tails

Not enough to make me feel jealous at all, and in my own selfish world a good thing.
