I wouldn't put too much fear into the reliability of TATA Jags, and I'd be willing to bet it would be better than a Q5 over the long haul (not that it would be a concern if you plan to lease). It might even see less shop time than a GM product

Flat towing. "We" aka her dad has an RV. We would LIKE, but not need, The ability to flat tow a vehicle behind it. Not 100% needed, but that would be cool to have.

GM is probably going to be your best bet if you desire the ability to be flat towed, especially since you've said no Jeeps (since FCA). Just make sure that the transfer case has a selectable neutral position.

Background: We used to own a Class C, and flat towed a Jeep Liberty. That was an upgrade from the tow dolly and a Passat wagon. The Blue-Ox tow bar system was a breeze.

Edit: Baseplates are available for adaptive cruise models.

Sorry clarification on the price. We are expecting an insurance check for 40-45k. We don't have to stay at that number, but we aren't trying to upgrade either. So we can go over or under. But aren't trying to jump above 45k.

SS is not 20% right now.

And mid-sized trucks (Canyon/ Colorado are ok).

Friend just picked up a GMC Sierra Terrain for track car towing and such. One hell of a truck for under 40k. Super comfy and smooth with plenty of power. 8 speed feels really nice too.

Misses just said a Wrangler would be cool. We can definitely flat tow it. I'm still thinking she would get tired of the Spartan ride and small trunk space. But I bet I can get an Unlimited for $10k less than a 4Runner, which would be its competitor to us.

I checked out the criteria. What about the cx9? It may not check every single box but I've heard good things about it.

So much for no FCA. I'd look at an Unlimited version, but I think you're right - she wouldn't be happy with the ride or cargo space if she loved her Volvo. Better choices, it seems, for you guys.

No Mazda, or any other Japanese brand minus Lexus/ Acura, except 4Runner.

No Korean cars. I have a loaded Sante Fe AWD right now this week. Not a fan.

We would tow a small camper, so even a Golf could do it.

No FCA. Wrangler is the rare exception. I would buy a Wrangler for ME. But this is her car.

You must be out of touch with what higher trim V8 variants of muscle cars cost these days.

Gotcha - yeah you don't need diesel. We tow a ~3000 lb camper with the Durango. No sweat...

Ahh - I missed that nuance. I still think the Unlimited is the way to go. PizzaCat will disagree.

Another vote for the Acadia.. The All Terrain package removes the third row.

The dealer must have ordered that one so someone could wrap it and put big wheels on it. That is the most boring SUV I've seen short of the Tahoe cop models.

what's wrong with this F-pace? just put some bigger wheels on it and it's ready to go. keep this set for winter and planned off-roading.

      MDX?

I love the 4Runner, but BOF, very compromised driving dynamics if that matters...

Too bad about the CX-9, new one is awesome, IMO.

New Armada? But probably too big as you mentioned (garage constraints)...

I also like the F-Pace idea > comparable Volvo. Poverty spec or not, just get a nice summer wheel/tire set, save OEM wheels for winter tires or sell them. Probably better to drive than the Volvo too if reviews can be trusted...

3 GT? Great deals can be had...
Current: 2013 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X (his), 2016 BMW 3 Series GT (hers)
Past: 2008 Honda Civic Si (sold), 2012 Mustang GT (sold), 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII (sold), 2001 VW Golf 1.8T (sold)

      She hates Nissan.

4Runner can't drive worse than a Colorado Z71. She had an Xterra 4x4 years ago and liked it.

We have thought about a CPO MDX.

F-Pace is cool. She thinks they are gorgeous and it has the yuppie appeal that we want.

Now this was a superior machine. Ten grand worth of gimmicks and high-priced special effects. The rear windows lit up with a touch like frogs in a dynamite pond. The dashboard was full of esoteric lights and dials and meters that I would never understand.
