About 15 months ago, I spotted a 993 parked on someone's lawn. Not just any 993, but a C2S. Late model, split grille, low mileage... but tiptronic.

There was grime all over, tires flat, interior filthy. I stopped to talk, and this disheveled guy wasn't interested in selling it. He had lost his job, but was going to get the car driving again once he started working.

A winter passed and I returned, it was still in the same spot. We chatted, and he really didn't want to sell it. It was the last thing he owned since his wife left, took his kids and he lost his job. At that time I had my 128i and there was another 1 series in the driveway which was his. The 993 had been sitting since 2014.

When I returned the third time, the 993 moved to the driveway but the 128i was gone. Turns out that got Repo'ed as well and he was going to consider selling the 993 if he couldn't find a new job. It's now almost a year later and it's snowing when I visited again. My 128i was gone and I already moved onto my 997.2S, so it wasn't really rational to have another Porsche regardless of how good the deal would be, yet I persisted. He said that he'd sell it if he didn't get this job promised to him in March, four months away.

I waited again, and stopped by in March. As I pull up he was actually arguing with his girlfriend about how he wasn't working and had all this money tied up in the Porsche. Tells me to call him, and this is where I'm starting to feel his mind might change.

Now it's April and he tells me the job didn't come through and would consider selling it when it was a bit warmer. Well last weekend was warm, and so were my fuzzy insides because after about 2 hours of negotiating in his driveway he begrudgingly agreed to sell it to me. We drove to the bank and on the way back he requested to stop at the liquor store. And there we were, at 10am drinking scotch in the driveway with my second 911 in hands.

With prices spiraling out of control, this is my last chance to own a widebody aircooled 993 for anything less than a fortune. Let me just say it needs a fair bit of work - but even with the tiptronic it oozes personality.

I don't usually name my cars, but he called this one Betsy and I think that'll remain. Welcome to the family.

Well cmon, show us how bad it is

Great story, but also a little depressing. Here's to hoping the guy doesn't blow all the Porsche money on booze

EDIT - you added pics of the car without a cover, very nice!

      Ooh, exciting!

      I love your persistence.

That really is a nice looking car. What are your plans for it?

I know it's the typical TCL comment, but I'm assuming you got this for quite the steal, based on the back story. Would it be a candidate for a six speed swap?
Own a Chevrolet SS? Join the Official TCL Registry!

      It's me, Rabbit, I promise.

Body surprisingly good, but in need of a serious detail.

Dash has cracks, door handles broken - small but annoying (and expensive) things to address. Plans so far? Not sure. I could drive it for the next 100k miles and probably not lose a dollar, but I really have to assess how I feel about the tiptronic. Stay tuned.

A 6 speed swap would be a $10k endeavor, minimum. Not really worth it, and I've researched extensively.

Plus - I have the 997 for that

What any normal person would think is an insane amount for a 20 year old car.

What any person on here would think is a great deal.

      I like this.

Planning on keeping it a tip or doing a swap? How involved is that?

Awesome, the C2S/C4S is my favorite of the 993's.

As an aside, my pediatrician growing up had a 993 C4S in Black. He loved it and had it for quite awhile, for as long as I can remember as a child till I was about 18 so ~10 years. He finally sold it around 2008--10 and got a Cayenne saying things like he was getting older and all the typical excuses and that the cayenne was great. A few years later he hinted at regretting selling. I'm sure the uptick in prices also didn't help soothe him in the recent years.

Anyways, I hadn't seen him in some years, but he lives only about a mile from my house in the same neighborhood. Long story short I saw him driving the other day in a 991 GTS in black, on black centerlocking wheels, it was basically what appeared to be a well optioned GTS. /CSB

My point: Tip or not, enjoy it and don't take it for granted. The 993 is what comes to mind when I think Carrera, I hate that the prices have gone out of control.

EDIT: If the guy pictured is the seller he looks like The Dude's cousin.

Wow, what a find and what a story. OP, good to hear you got the car.

Now let's hope the previous owner gets his s**t together. I'm worried he'll spend a couple of years talking to an empty driveway.

Very cool find...a 993 C2S Tip is a great commuter car for my area (DC area). I have a friend that commutes in his 993 C2 Tip to his job at the smithsonian.
We have other cars if we just NEED to shift a car, but for sitting in bumper-to-bumper a Tip is nice.

      Well said

The C2S is soooooo pretty. If there wasn't a manual 997 already in the fleet I'd argue that the manual swap is worth it, both from a driving perspective and value, yes? Still, hard to argue with just leaving it stock 👍🏽
