The Five Guys down the street just closed and I don't really care. The fries are good, but I hugely prefer In-N-Out burgers that are also far less expensive. No good chains in my vicinity so I just stick to local places.

I can't get excited about a burger place that sells their burgers well-done.

Until maybe in this thread, I have never heard anyone say:

In n Out is simply the best place.....FOR THE PRICE

The comments are always imply this revered cult like white light moment that is In n Out.

I am simply saying No, it's not. The experience is in fact quite pedestrian.

We ain't got no White Castle here.
      But we got Krystal!
People actually think Krystal is like White Castle because burgers are tiny and box designed building.
Krystal burgers are just dried grease on a roll.
The ONLY thing Krystal has decent is breakfast because they actually have good bacon.
Oh, and southern Poutine at certain locations.

      In-N-Out by far.

They opened up their first Oregon joint (no pun inteneded) about 30miles north of the California border. Closest one was 3 hours south in redding. Not a big fast food fan, but always would hit up the redding spot while traveling south. Five guys varies horribly by location. Franchising vs. making sure the brand is secure. One did a much better job, and is why there are lines at every....single.....one........

I don't eat beef and 5 guys doesn't offer veggie options so I head straight to the In-N-Out grilled cheese sandwich . EDIT: Well, I just noticed above that 5 guys offers veggie options. I wonder when that showed up?! Last time I went to one, it was beef only.

      Sorry.

I've been burnt way too many times trying veggie burgers at chains.
The best I ever had was a tofu burger at the Ok Cafe in Atlanta.
But that was years ago... no, decades ago.
      Wow.. I'm old.

*not vegetarian, but I also don't "crave meat" every meal or even every day.

No, it's not at all. The food is simple and without any culinary boldness or novelty, but the execution, consistency and customer experience are so above the fast-food industry norm that you simply can't use the word "pedestrian" to describe them.

I'm not on the Five Guys bandwagon (they are pretty decent, though) - but I have never been more underwhelmed by a place I was looking forward to trying than I was the first time I got out to CA and tried In-N-Out.

      Way overrated.

Which might be why I was slightly impressed by Five Guys

While I somewhat agree, when price and convenience is taken into the equation it's pretty amazing.

Five guys is almost at the price point where I can go to a bar and get a REALLY good burger that isn't over cooked.

At least 10 years. I recall it being on the menu the first time we went to one in CT.
