Mediocre compared to what? It doesn't get much better in the cheap fast burger category.

Has anyone mentioned shake shack? Because it's not even on the same planet.

I did a back to back comparison about a month ago. Shake Shack burgers crush In n Out, their fries don't need a pile of gross sauce/cheese/onions to make them good (and even then they're still not that good), and their shakes are way better.

It's not an entirely fair comparison though because what I just described is like $16 at Shake Shack, and that could feed a small family at In n Out. In n Out is great compared to MacDonalds and other true fast food places, but of the two I'd rather pay extra and get Shake Shack.

You have mediocre confused with "middle of the road." In-N-Out is the most excellent middle of the road burger anywhere for the price. The ingredients are always fresh, your food is made to order, and it's delivered by a smiling face wearing a snazzy uniform.

Furthermore, In-N-Out starts their workers at $10.50 an hour, and a store manager can work up to $120k a year. They also provide medical, dental and vision insurance to ALL their workers, both full AND part-time.

In-N-Out is a godamned American success story, son. Please think on this the next time someone starts in with the Commiefornia crap again.

Okay, perhaps mediocre was a bit harsh. Middle of the road works.

Compared to just about anything. I do agree for the price it's not bad (IIRC 5 guys is more expensive) but the comments and cult like following for something so pedestrian is a mystery to me.

I guess if you're drunk and hungry it's hard to beat for the price, but anyone can fry meat in mustard sauce and dump more sauce all over it.

Well-executed middle-of-the-road at a fair price is actually kinda hard to find.

I agree that the food isn't anything special, in and of itself, but it is very-well executed. I think part of the "cult-like" following is that you get so much more than you expect to get at that price. I can't think of another fast food chain with staff that looks so professional, and who are so cheerful. No one is mopey or going through the motions at In-N-Out. It's actually a refreshing change from the service-industry norm, in that sense.

Finally, someone pretentious enough to call a $2.40 fast food burger "pedestrian". Name one other place that makes a better burger for anywhere near that price. It's meant to be a cheap fast food burger that's better than pretty much any other cheap fast food burger. It does that very well.

No, if you're drunk and hungry, Del Taco is hard to beat for the price.

And to refresh your memory, Five Guys is about 2.5x more expensive. Example: Fiesta ST vs. BMW M3.

You are right. It is just fried meat. The choice of all the free sauces and toppings is the key to their success - along with the huge helping of fries (or Cajun fries) that they dump in your bag.

      Onions
      Jalapeño Peppers
      Green Peppers

But 5 Guys isn't exactly cheap and of course their prices vary by location:

Well, Chick-fil-a. But I suppose that is because of a different kind of cult. But honestly, I'm not sure why other chains haven't figured out to get that level of employee courtesy and engagement

In n Out treats employees well, as mentioned above. They pride themselves on quality, fresh ingredients, customization is welcomed there. It is solid every time and I have never had a bad customer service experience in my 34 years of dining there.

In n out keeps religion where is belongs - on the underside of cups. I watched "The Founder" and it seems like in n out is what mcdonalds was in the 50s.

In a time pinch going back to office today I grabbed a Whopper and ate it sans bun at my desk (have gf buns in fridge to toast and had coupon for cheap Whopper,).
      I was hungry.
      It was good.

Excerpt from an actual conversation with Mrs. mycarsux last night while driving, and trying to decide what to have for dinner.

Me: I could do Five Guys.
Her: I could do five guys. (gives me a look)
Me: I was talking about hamburgers.
      Her: Oh. (looks away sheepishly)

That is all I have to add.
